It is with sadness I mark the death of Professor Anthony V. Powell, who passed away on 22 May 2026 at the age of 62, after a long battle with cancer. I know Anthony throughout my PhD and later. He was a wonderful scientist who provided endless support for his colleagues.and remarkably keen crystallographic insight. During my PhD he visited our labs many times to use the SQUID he shared with us in Edinburgh. He was always willing to share his insight and knowledge, teaching me Rietveld refinement and attempting to teach me how to refine a magnetic structure using black and white flags in GSAS. I fear that he failed in the latter, which led me to look for other methods, such as the application of representational analysis. This, I should mark, was my failure as a student, rather than his as a teacher.\u00a0 Anthony was a wonderful person to be around and my deepest sympathy goes out to all that knew and were close to him. He will be greatly missed.<\/p>\n
